Sometimes you
can catch halibut and salmon in the same area, but most of the time
we will be
fishing several areas throughout the day. The average size halibut
that we catch on a Seward
“combo mambo” fishing charter is 20 to 40 pounds. However,
it is not uncommon to catch
halibut over 100lbs on a “combo mambo” charter! Since
we are fishing only half the day, we will
not have the time to pick thru the smaller halibut in search of bigger
halibut. You would need a
full day halibut charter to accomplish this.
Once everyone has caught their halibut or our time
is up, we will switch over to salmon tackle
and start searching for some shiny silvers! When we find a good
concentration of silvers, we will
throw out lots of chum (small pieces of cut herring) into the water
to attract the silvers to the boat.
Then you will mooch for them with chunks of cut herring or use crippled
herring jigs. When the
silvers start biting, be ready for total chaos. It is not uncommon
to see multiple anglers with
multiple hookups of silvers!
When
everyone catches their breath from the salmon fishing mayhem or our
time is up we will venture
out to some Alaska lingcod~ Alaska rockfish fishing holes. Depending
on the fishing spot, we will
either use the halibut fishing poles or the med. light salmon fishing
poles. Jig fishing is the game
plan; you never know what you may hook, whether it is an Alaska
lingcod or Alaska yellow eye or
Alaska black bass or the dozen varieties of Alaska rockfish!
